How to Pick a Carrier for Your Motorcycle & Vehicle

Sometimes it's best not to ride your motorcycle but better to haul it.

Whether on a journey to a far-off riding destination or a short trip to get serviced, for many, it's a requirement to be able to haul your motorcycle. Not all motorcycles are street legal, and some have low top speeds making it challenging to get too far. And even if your bike is equipped to make it for a long track or trail day – it's best to keep the riding to the destination.

Regardless of your bike or reason, MotoTote exists to make hauling easy for virtually any vehicle with a tow hitch. Unlike a trailer, a MotoTote motorcycle carrier is easier to drive, stores easier, requires no registration and is legal in HOV lanes. And compared to other motorcycle carriers, the MotoTote is overbuilt for its weight classes, is much lighter and creates a safer on road experience.

So how do you discover which motorcycle carrier is right for you?

If you have a dirt bike, scooter, or motorcycle with small to standard-sized tires, this section is for you:

The primary goal of a motorcycle carrier for dirt bikes or scooters is to find a carrier that adequately supports the motorcycle's weight, wedges the motorcycle's tire size and fits the motorcycle's wheelbase. A proper fit helps hold the bike with maximum stability and creates less of a hazard on the road.

For these kinds of motorcycles with smaller or more average tire sizes, we recommend the m3 or Max motorcycle carrier – as they are specifically designed for these motorcycles fitting front tire sizes up to 4.75” and rear tire sizes up to 6”.

If you have a sport motorcycle, scrambler, dual-sport or motorcycle with larger tires this section is for you:

We get a lot of questions if specific motorcycles work with a MotoTote motorcycle carrier, and the answer is yes if the bike weighs under 600 lbs. and has front tire sizes less than 5.5" wide and rear tire sizes less than 9" wide.

For larger bikes, we recommend our Sport and Max+ motorcycle carrier - as they are perfectly suited to wedge and hold larger motorcycles under 600 lbs. But while MotoTote motorcycle carriers can haul these size bikes, it does not mean that your vehicle can.

What about your vehicle?

Your vehicle's towing capacity must be adequate to support the weight of your motorcycle and the MotoTote motorcycle carrier. To calculate, you need to do this math.

To calculate the maximum weight capacity for your vehicle, divide your vehicle's towing capacity by 10 and then subtract 60 lbs. (27 kgs.) Example: 5000 lbs. (2273 kg) towing capacity divided by 10 = 500 lbs. (227 kg) minus MotoTote weight of 60 lbs. (27 kg) = 440 lbs. (200 kg). This 440 lbs is the maximum tongue weight your vehicle can safely haul.
