The MotoTote is a hitch mounted motorcycle and scooter carrier.

The MotoTote comes in two versions:

1. MotoTote MTX m3 for dirt bikes and scooters weighing up to 450 lbs.
2. MotoTote MTX Sport for sport and street bikes with rear tire width of up to 8.5 inches and weighing up to 550 lbs.

We don't know of any laws in the United States that prohibit use of hitch-mounted motorcycle carriers.

No - The MotoTote MTX m3 model has an adjustable wheel stop that is designed to accommodate small scooter tires.

That depends on how heavy a bike you intend to carry. Generally speaking: Bigger bike = bigger vehicle.

Not if you stay within the weight limitations of the vehicle and hitch.

Your vehicle's suspension is designed to handle up to a specific weight. Your vehicle hitch weight capacity is one expression of this weight.

In most cases your tail lights will not be blocked.

If they are blocked, you can buy a MotoTote Light Kit  which is a specially designed set of tail lights for the MotoTote.

License plates are RARELY blocked. As a matter of fact, from a customer service point of view, this has been a non-existent complaint.

The size of the vehicle depends on how big a bike you want to haul with the MotoTote. Check your vehicle user manual, find the total towing capacity of the vehicle and divide it by 10. This is a good estimate of the weight you can put on the hitch.

For example: Total towing capacity = 3500 lbs. divided by 10 = 350 lbs.

In this example, you could carry a bike weighing 290 lbs. because 60 lbs. of the 350 lbs. capacity is used by the MotoTote itself.

The MotoTote MTX Sport is rated to carry up to 550 lbs.

The MotoTote MTX m3 is rated to carry up to 450 lbs.

In both cases, the weight-on-hitch capacity (also called tongue weight capacity) of your vehicle needs to be at least as much as the total weight of your motorcycle or scooter + the MotoTote which weighs 60 lbs.

For example: To use the MTX Sport to its full 550 lbs. capacity, you would need a vehicle with a tongue weight capacity of at least 610 lbs. That's 550 lbs. for the bike + 60 lbs. for the MotoTote carrier.

Yes. Both versions of the MotoTote are adjustable for wheel base (this is the distance between axles).

Additionally, the MTX m3 model is adjustable for front wheel diameters from small scooter tires up to dirt bike sized tires.

Yes. It is adjustable up to a distance of 20 inches from the hitch pin to the center of the motorcycle or scooter.

The Zero-Wobble bolt is the MotoTote solution to the problem of looseness at the connection to the receiver which is common in all hitch mounted accessories such as bike carriers, motorcycle carriers, and cargo carriers. The bolt tightens this connection and eliminates any rocking of the MotoTote carrier.

For a clearer explanation of the Zero-Wobble bolt function and installation, please refer to the section at the bottom of page 3 of the MotoTote User Manual.

Tongue weigh capacity (also called weight-on-hitch or hitch capacity) is the weight that can safely be carried on your vehicle hitch. This weight capacity is specific to you vehicle/hitch combination. Although most class III hitches are rated at 500 lbs. or more, your vehicle may have lower rating.

To find the the tongue weight capacity of your vehicle, check your vehicle user manual. If the tongue weight capacity is not explicitly stated, find the total towing capacity of the vehicle and divide it by 10. This is a good estimate of the weight you can put on the hitch.

For example: Total towing capacity = 3500 lbs. divided by 10 = 350 lbs.

Towing capacity is the total weight of the trailer that your vehicle can tow. This capacity is relevant to the MotoTote because it is a useful indication of how much weight you can safely put on the hitch - See previous question.

The ground clearance will be approximately the same as the hitch receiver.

Both MotoTote MTX motorcycle carriers come with a loading ramp included. The ramp length is 57 inches. This is important because the longer the ramp, the less of an incline there will be, thus making loading of the motorcycle or scooter easier.

Ramp incline is 15 degrees with a 15 inch ground clearance (see ground clearance question above). This, of course will vary depending on the height of your vehicle

The distance to the vehicle is adjustable up to 20 inches from the hitch pin to the center of the motorcycle or scooter.

The bike is easily loaded using the included loading ramp.

No. As a matter of fact most of our customers, including many women, report they are able to load even heavy bikes by themselves.

Yes. All MotoTote motorcycle carriers come with loading ramp included.

The loading ramp stows conveniently at attachment points with quick disconnect hardware on the MotoTote carrier between the bike and the vehicle. This means you don't have to put the ramp inside your vehicle for transport.

Yes. Assembly can be accomplished in approximately 30 minutes including unpacking, getting tools (one wrench), reading instructions, etc. Please refer to the MotoTote User Manual.

The MotoTote attaches with a special bolt, called the Zero-Wobble Bolt, which is used in place of your regular hitch pin. The purpose of the bolt is to tighten the connection to the hitch and eliminate any rocking of the MotoTote carrier.

Many customers attach a gas can with tie-downs to the loading ramp after it has been stowed (See loading ramp question above).

This is not a procedure we endorse because we have not done the necessary testing to provide safety data. Some customer do attach a hitch ball to the carrier.
